There are some rules to learn and follow about what you can put into your compost bin in order to keep your pile healthy and working properly. The most widespread organic material that you will add to your compost will be kitchen scraps. The kitchen scraps are considered green food that you feed to your compost as they contain nitrogen, an essential element to the process.

It is a good idea to have a container with an airtight lid to store the food waste in your kitchen. You do not want to attract insects or pests inside your home nor do you want to be running to your compost bin every time you make a meal or snack. If your kitchen container is airtight you will also cut down on unpleasant odors.

Here is a list of the most commonly used compost items from the kitchen:

Vegetable peels and seeds

Fruit peels, cores, and seeds

Coffee grounds, you can compost the paper filter too

Tea bags or loose tea leaves

Crushed egg shells, do not add left-over eggs cooked or raw

Breads

You may be tempted to add other food scraps into the bin, but don’t. You should not add any animal meat or bones, oily products, or fish remains not only will they be sure to attract unwanted pests but they will make your compost smell badly. Whenever you are adding your green food to the compost bin, make sure you cover it under a thick layer of brown food (yard waste or other carbon producing agent such as dry leaves, wood chips, sawdust, or small twigs).

If your food scraps are very wet or moist, in addition to putting brown food on top of the scraps mix some in with the waste too. This will enable better air circulation.

There is great debate at the moment on whether it is worthwhile purchasing organic food as it is usually much more expensive than conventional food.

The advantages of organic food are well documented, however in my eyes it really comes down to one issue, do you and your children really want to eat pesticides with your food?

Assuming your answer is no and you want to go down the organic food route, then how do you go about keeping the cost down?

Grow your own

The cheapest method has got to be to grow your own. The great thing is that it doesn’t require you to have much garden space, or even a garden at all!

We grow tomatoes, and strawberries in containers and the extra benefit is that you get total control over the growing conditions.

The best combination is to have organic soil together with organically produced seeds or plants, that way you ensure you get the full flavour and benefit.

Containers can be placed anywhere that receives a reasonable amount of daylight, which means that you can use them on balconies or other hard surfaces.

Look for your local suppliers

One of the most satisfying things to do is to buy organic food locally. That way you get the freshest ingredients for your kitchen and also get to support local businesses. With no transportation costs for the supplier too you should get very competitive prices.

Don’t forget that these same businesses will be employing local staff so you are also helping the local economy, everybody wins in this scenario.

Local markets

We visit a big monthly market held on a disused airstrip. Organic food is just one of the variety of items sold there but the prices are very, very good indeed. Of course they are all local suppliers and with several of them in one place we benefit from healthy competition and get to sample a lot of fruit!

Local box schemes

If you are unable to get out of your house or are too busy working to select your groceries by hand then why not subscribe to an organic box scheme?

You will receive, delivered to your door, a weekly selection of fruit and vegetables in season.

Farm shops

Finally, investigate whether any farms near you are operating an organic farm shop. Our local one is operated on an open farm so that you can go and see where the animals are being kept and take a look at the crops being grown.

They actually have a well-designed walking route around the farm which makes a nice day out for the kids too.

If you investigate the options above you should be able to make considerable savings whilst you and your family sample the delights and advantages of organic food.

If you are interested improving the way that you eat, you may also be interested in making the switch to organic foods. Although many individuals are able to do so with ease, it can take others a little bit more time. If you are looking for easy ways and tips to help make the switch to organic foods, please continue reading on.

Getting Started

The first step in making the switch to organic foods involves getting use to the cost. Many individuals who decide to go organic without first researching are put off by the costs, as organic foods do cost more. This is something that you should prepare for. If you decide to eat organic only foods, the cost increase in your weekly or monthly grocery bill can get quite high and add up overtime. Although organic foods are more than worth their costs, you should still prepare for the change.

In addition to preparing for the cost increase, you should also examine ways that you can save money when eating organically. For example, organic food coupons can be found on online coupon websites, as well as the websites of organic food manufacturers. Simply Organic and Earth’s Best Organic are known for regularly offering free printable coupons on their websites. Newspapers can also be examined. Also, familiarize yourself with stores in the area that are known for their affordable prices or great sales on organic food.

Prepare

It is also a good idea to start preparing for the disappearance of many of the artificial additives that are found in many foods. Although many will notice a taste difference, that taste difference is usually an improvement with organic foods. Even still, it takes some people time to get use to. For example, soda, like Pepsi, is not considered organic. If you are interested in having a truly organic diet, you will need to eliminate it from your diet. This can be easier said than done for many, as they grow dependent on the caffeine and other artificial additives. That is why a quick and full change to organic food is sometimes advised against.

As stated above, a quick switch to organic foods doesn’t always work well for everyone. What you will want to do is consider making a slow transition, especially if you are dependent on a particular food or drink. Sometimes slow is the best way to go. Consider incorporating a few organic snacks, like organic crackers or organic fruit bars, into your diet on a daily basis. Next, start with one meal, like organic oatmeal for breakfast. After a week or a few days, replace another meal with organic foods. Do so until you are completely organic.

It is also important to remember that eating organically isn’t right for everyone. With that being said, do not let the taste of certain foods turn you away. You will want to examine and try as many food products as you can. You should have multiple brands and flavors to choose from. For example, Simply Organic and other manufacturers sell organic flavors, extracts, spices, and dinner mixes. Give as many of these items and flavors as you can a try until you are able to find something that you like. This is a nice approach to take because it is important to remember that there are a large number of benefits to eating organic foods.

Have you just recently made the decision to start eating healthier with organic foods? If you have, you may be looking for ways to improve your shopping. If that is the case, you may want to consider buying your organic foods online.

When it comes to buying organic foods online, many individuals first wonder if they can do so. If you are one of those individuals, it is important to know that you can. Next, many wonder if it is worth it to shop online for organic foods. As for that answer, you will find that it all depends. A great way to determine if buying organic foods online is right for you is to examine the pros and cons of doing so.

One of the many pros or plus sides to buying organic foods online is the convenience of doing so. If you have ever shopped online before, you should already know just how easy it is to do so. A standard internet search can help you find a number of online organic food stores. When performing a standard internet search, you can search with a generalized phrase, such as ìorganic food stores,î or you can search for something in particular, such as “organic frozen meals.” Many also like the fact that their foods can be delivered directly to their doors.

In addition to saving you time, buying organic foods online can also save you money. This is because you have the ability to compare organic food sellers online. Not only can you compare their prices, but you can also compare their product selection and you can do so in just a few minutes worth of time. This is something that you cannot do when shopping locally. The ability to quickly and easily compare online organic food stores, products, and prices makes it easy for you to save money when shopping online.

The organic foods that you can find available for sale online are another one of the many pros or plus sides to buying organic foods online. There are many individuals who are surprised with just how many foods they can buy online. Popular foods that sell online include packaged organic foods, such as organic crackers or organic cookies. With that being said, there is so much more that is available for sale. Organic frozen foods and fresh organic fruits and vegetables can also be ordered online and delivered directly to your door.

Although there are a number of pros or plus sides to buying organic foods online, it is also important to focus on the cons or downsides to doing so. One of those downsides is that you must have internet access. Yes, most homes have internet access and a computer, but not all do. In addition to having internet access, most shoppers need to have an ideal way to pay online. For example, many online organic food stores only accept credit or debit cards, which must be processed as credit cards, as payment.

As it was previously stated, you have the ability to save money when looking to buy organic foods online. This is mostly due to the fact that you can easily and quickly compare prices, looking for the best deals. As nice as this is, it is important to proceed with caution where shipping is concerned. If you are not careful, the cost of shipping can add up or be too high. That is another one of the cons or downsides to shopping for organic foods online. With that said, you can eliminate this con by simply being aware and by never paying more for shipping than you need to.

Buying organic foods online is convenient for many, but some individuals can benefit the most from doing so. You may be one of those individuals if you do not have a specialty organic food store located nearby your home. Also, if you do, but are unimpressed with the prices or selection of foods, you can and should consider buying your organic foods online.

When you go to the grocery store or supermarket to buy fruits or vegetables, do you pick just any produce or are you particular about getting organic foods? There is a difference between the two and, after our discussion, you may decide that organic foods are the way to go. Let’s take a look at the benefits of buying organic produce.

While both types of produce may look the same, organic foods must be able to meet specific standards of production, including specific growing and processing conditions that are unique to foods that can be labeled ìorganicî. For crop foods, the organic foods can’t be grown using any chemical pesticides, non-organic fertilizer, human waste fertilizer or sludge from sewage. They also cannot be processed using ionizing radiationóa process that kills bacteria but that some people believe is unsafe. Finally, the food canít be genetically altered.

At one point, organic foods were grown on small farms, particularly those that were family-owned and operated. In today’s time, however, organic foods are grown on larger farms and are more readily available in most supermarkets, co-ops and health food stores. In the US, parts of Europe and Japan, the production of organic foods is currently federally regulated and in other countries, specific organic certification is required before these foods can be sold.

Organic foods can include fresh vegetables and fruits, which are not processed and come directly from the growers through farmer’s markets, supermarkets and roadside stands. Many of these products are only available during certain times of the year. One can also get organic eggs, dairy products and meat in their fresh and unprocessed forms.

Organic eggs are generally provided by free-range chickens and not from those kept in cages in large, egg factories. Organic meats must not come from animals that have been treated with any growth hormones, steroids or antibiotics. Processed organic foods can be found in the organic food section of the supermarket but often are more expensive than their conventional food counterparts. Processed organic foods can include canned products, frozen produce, prepared items and even snack foods.

In truth, processed organic foods need only contain a certain percentage of organic ingredients. In Australia, for example, a food can be labeled ìorganicî if it contains at least 95% organic ingredients. In other countries, however, the percentage can be less than that. Even so, those non-organic ingredients must be free of artificial food additives and no aspect of the food can be processed using chemical ripening techniques, genetic modification or irradiation. In some cases, the organic food must be made using energy-saving techniques and packaged in recyclable or biodegradable materials.

It’s not always easy to identify whether or not your food is truly organic. Sometimes, you need to buy directly from an organic grower in order to be certain the food is organic. More recently, however, foods that are organic can be identified by governmental labeling, stating that the food is certified organic.

Because of the safety and wholesomeness of organic foods, you may wish to do you and your family a favor by buying only organic products. The food tastes excellent and you can be assured youíre getting a product that wonít be harmful to you.

Are you a new parent? If you are, you may be looking for safe and healthy foods to feed your baby. When doing so, you will find that you have a small number of options. Unfortunately, a large number of baby foods currently on the market cannot be considered completely natural. If this causes you concern, you may want to take the time to examine organic baby food.

As nice as it is to hear that organic baby food is safe and healthy to feed your baby, you may be looking for reasons why you should do so. After all organic food is known for its increased prices. There are many first time parents who wonder if the cost is truly worth it. After a close examination, you will see that it is. In fact, there are at least three reasons why you should feed your new baby organic baby food.

1 – Organic Baby Food Is Healthy

The health reasons are just one of the many reasons why organic baby food is ideal for babies. As previously stated, many food products designed for babies cannot be considered completely natural. This is because many companies add in unhealthy sugars and other additives. This is not the case with organic foods.

Although there is no scientific proof, there are many individuals, including parents, who claim that organic food can help to improve a child’s health, as well as their behavior now and in the long run. Despite the lack of scientific proof, many parents are not willing to take the chance. Another impact has to do with recalls. Whether it be recalls on toys, food, or clothing, parents are concerned with companies following all government restrictions to the letter. Many wonder if a toy manufacturer can put too much led in a toy, can too many chemicals make their way into baby food?

2 – The Options that You Have

Another one of the many reasons why all parents should consider feeding their babies organic baby food is because of the options that they have, in terms of flavors. Unfortunately, many parents mistakenly believe that choosing organic foods limits the number of foods their children will be able to consume. Yes, this is true in some cases, but you may be surprised how many flavors and different variety food are available for babies and other small children.

As an example of having an option, in terms of organic baby food, Earth’s Best Organic is a well-known supplier and product manufacturer of organic foods for families. In terms of their jarred baby food, which is ideal for infants, they have flavors that include apples, carrots, bananas, peas, sweet potatoes, and pears. It is also important to mention that these flavors are only for jarred baby food. Organic formula, rice cereals, and other snacks can be made organically as well.

3 – You Can Make Your Own Organic Baby Food
