<p>Most conscientious cooks use common sense when preparing or storing food. But common sense in food preparation doesn&#8217;t just happen -it is learned. This learning happens and when we forget where we learned it, we call it common sense.</p>



<p>Here are just a few pointers to refresh and reinforce your common sense as you are preparing your current meal or storing it for future use.</p>



<ul><li>Food safety actually starts with your excursion to the supermarket. Pick up the packaged or canned foods. Do the cans have dents? Don&#8217;t buy them. Is the jar cracked? Leave it. Does the lid seem loose or bulging? Pick up another. Look for any expiration dates on the labels -they are there for a reason. Never buy outdated food. Check the &#8220;use by&#8221; or &#8220;sell by&#8221; date on dairy products and pick the ones that will stay fresh the longest.</li><li>After grocery shopping, put food into the refrigerator or freezer right away. Make sure to set the refrigerator temperature is set to 40 deg F and the freezer is set to 0 F. Refrigerate or freeze perishables, prepared foods, and leftovers within 2 hours. Raw meat, poultry, and seafood should be placed in containers to prevent their juices from dripping on other foods. Raw juices could possibly harbor harmful bacteria. Eggs always go in the refrigerator.</li><li>Always cook food thoroughly until it is done. Red meat should turn brown inside. Chicken, when poked with a fork, should have clear juices. Fish, on the other hand, when poked with a fork, should flake. Cooked egg whites and yolks should be firm and not run. Be sure to use a food thermometer to check the internal temperatures of your poultry, meat, and other foods. Leave it in long enough to ensure an accurate reading.</li><li>Wash your hands and cooking surfaces frequently. Bacteria can be spread quickly so this will ensure that it will not take hold and grow onto your food. A solution of one teaspoon of bleach in one quart of water is all that is needed to sanitize washed surfaces and utensils.</li><li>Cooked foods should definitely not be left standing in the kitchen counter or table for more than two hours. Bacteria tends to grow in temperatures between 40 and 140 deg F.</li><li>Foods that have been cooked ahead and cooled should be reheated to at least 165 deg F. (This just so happens to be one of the most overlooked areas in food prep).</li><li>Chill Leftover Food Promptly. Place food in the refrigerator and don&#8217;t overfill. The cold air needs to circulate freely to keep food safe. Divide the food and place in shallow containers. Think about labeling some of these containers so you don&#8217;t lose track of how long they&#8217;ve been refrigerating.</li></ul>



<p>These are just a few pointers that you already know, but need to keep remembering. If you follow these basics you will avoid most of the &#8216;disasters in waiting&#8217;!</p>

<p>One of the best ways to determine if you are suffering from
a food allergy is to visit your healthcare provider.&nbsp; Many develop tests or trails to determine
which food or foods you are allergic to, if any.&nbsp; It is also a good idea to visit a doctor if
you suspect that you may have a food allergy, as they may be able to provide
you with information and tips on making a lifestyle change, which may include
eliminating the food or foods that are causing your problems.&nbsp; Medication may also be given.</p>



<p>As previously stated, hives are a good indication that you
may be suffering from a food allergy.&nbsp; In
fact, hives are one of the most common symptoms experienced by those who do
have a food allergy.&nbsp; Hives are easy to
notice and spot.&nbsp; If you develop hives,
they can be treated with use of oatmeal.&nbsp;
A great home remedy involves taking a cup of bowling water and pouring
it over oatmeal.&nbsp; After a few minutes
strain, then let cool some more and dab on the hives with a cotton ball or
cloth.&nbsp; While this home remedy will help
with your hives, it is still important to determine which foods are causing
them.</p>



<p>Swelling of the tongue and throat are two more common symptoms
of a food allergy.&nbsp; These symptoms can, unfortunately,
lead to difficult breathing.&nbsp; If you ever
experience these symptoms, you will want to seek medical attention right away.&nbsp; This is important if you have not officially
been diagnosed as having a food allergy, as you may not have helpful medication
on hand.&nbsp; </p>



<p>Those who suffering from food allergies who have a reaction
may also feel light headed or experience a loss of conscious.&nbsp; If this happens to you, it is important that
medical attention is sought right away. In fact, death can be the results if improper
medical attention and care.&nbsp; That is why
it is important to seek medical attention the moment that you suspect you may
have a food allergy.&nbsp; As previously
stated, hives are a good sign that you may.&nbsp;
You should seek the advice of a professional in the medical field before
your symptoms are able escalate.</p>



<p>Once you have officially been diagnosed as having a food
allergy, it is important that you let those around you know of your
diagnosis.&nbsp; This is particularly
important if you regularly eat dinner at the homes of your friends or
relatives.&nbsp; Those individuals will need
to know what not to include in their meals or they can make alternative
arrangements for you.&nbsp; This notification
is also important in case you have a reaction.&nbsp;

<p>Making dried fruit and fruit leathers isn’t hard and it
doesn’t have to be expensive either. While some food processors and juicers can
get really pricey, a dehydrator isn’t going to cost that much and it’s a
lifesaver to have fruit leathers, dried fruit or fruit jerky on hand when you
can’t get out to the store for fresh food.</p>



<p>When buying a dehydrator, some things to consider are the
materials and construction used to manufacture the product, the size, heating
elements, fans and guarantees. Make sure you have room for the dehydrator in
the space you have planned for it.&nbsp;
Choose one that’s multi-purpose, with multiple trays and special trays
for fruits and herbs. A side-mounted or horizontal fan is best when choosing a
food dehydrator.</p>



<p>Here are some food dehydrators to consider. But do a little
research to find just the right one for you!</p>



<p>Nesco American Harvest – A very inexpensive food dehydrator

<p>It is possible for people to make healthy food choices even if they only have a short time in which to prepare their meals. The first thing to realize is that it is often that healthy choices do not always mean a need for two-hour meals. A person can choose healthy foods that are quick and easy to prepare at home or to pickup from a takeout place. Cities often provide restaurant guides in their telephone books that display full-page menus indicating what a particular restaurant or drive-thru offers. Many of these food vendors now include healthy alternatives to their usual fast-food selection.</p>
<p>At places like McDonald&#8217;s and Hardee&#8217;s, it is possible to find consumers who are concerned about their carbohydrate consumption. This has prompted the restaurants to provide other options in their hamburger choices. Hamburgers can be ordered without the bun, for example, and fruit and yogurt are included on the menu along with fresh salads. Many restaurants provide salad choices either as side orders or as complete meals. Often, a salad of fresh vegetables with chopped ham, roast beef or chicken is more attractive than regular menu items. Salads are especially appealing in the summer months because they are lighter on the digestive system.</p>
<p>Restaurants that feature foods in season cultivated by local farmers offer very healthy and affordable choices. Some of these kinds of restaurants will create their own recipes for healthy food options. This provides the consumer with a totally new choice and encourages them to visit the restaurant again.</p>

<p>If home preparation of food is preferred, the options for healthy choices increase. Visiting a local grocery store or supermarket emphasizes the number of healthy choices that are available. Fresh fruits and vegetables are more varied than ever before due to improvements in transportation and preservation methods. All types of cuisine can be prepared quickly because of the choices of fresh goods rather than frozen foods. There are numerous choices among frozen foods as well. The demand for healthy frozen dinners and other meals has increased along with demands for more variety in frozen food offerings. Any frozen food aisle in any supermarket will show as many healthy food options and poor choices. The decision is up to the individual.</p>
<p>People can either choose to eat a healthy diet or an unhealthy one. Time and availability of healthy choices are no longer problems for a person who is trying to eat better and healthier foods.</p>

<p>Carbohydrates have been put into the spotlight ever since diets like the Atkin’s Diet and the South Beach Diet have recommended cutting carbohydrates out of your meals as much as possible. However, before you make a drastic decision about what foods to include and not include, it is crucial to learn about carbohydrates and what they do for your body.</p>
<p>In short, carbohydrates can be good or bad for your body. It is necessary to eat enough good carbohydrates because that is how our body has enough energy for low-intensity activities during the day. Carbohydrates are famously found in bread and grains, but actually, they are also found in a number of other foods as well, such as fruits and vegetables. When keeping an eye on your intake of carbohydrates it is important to distinguish the good from the bad.</p>
<p>All carbohydrates are basically sugars. Complex carbohydrates are the good carbohydrates for your body. These strings of sugar are very difficult to break down and trap over nutrients like vitamins and minerals in the sugar strings. As they slowly break down, the other nutrients are also released into your body, and you can provide with fuel for a number of hours.</p>
<p>Bad carbohydrates, on the other hand, are simple sugars. Because their structure is not complex, it is easy to break down and holds little nutrients for your body other than the sugars from which it is made. Your body breaks down these carbohydrates rather quickly and what it cannot use is converted to fat and stored in the body. Staying away from simple carbohydrates is what most diets recommend since they have little nutritional value when compared to complex carbohydrates.</p>
<p>More importantly than how carbohydrates work in the body and the difference between good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates is how you can actually eat these carbohydrates! First, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. These foods include carbohydrates, but also a variety of other nutrients needed by your body. Another great tip is to cut the white bread and bread products out of your diet and replace them with whole wheat or 12-grain bread instead. Look at the packaging. Foods rich in fiber are probably a source of good carbohydrates.</p>
<p>Learning the difference between good and bad carbohydrates is very important if you wish to have a healthy diet. It is not good for your body to cut out carbohydrates completely—in fact, that is very difficult to do unless you only eat meat! Eating a healthy and balanced diet means including good carbohydrates into your meals.</p>

<p>If you are interested in eating a healthy diet compared to your current diet, I have good news or you-you don’t have to be rich to do so. It is fully possible to involve yourself in healthy eating, even if you are on a very tight budget. This may require a little bit of extra time and effort to plan your meals, but you can make good and inexpensive food choice in order to provide your body with excellent nutrition.</p>
<p>First, it is important to plan for your healthy diet. When you go shopping, take a list with you of the healthy foods you need to purchase instead of walking up and down the aisles without a plan. When you have a shopping list, you are less likely to purchase random junk foods that you do not need, and so you’ll save money as well as be good for your health. Planning ahead with a list also allows you to look through store sales fliers in order to choose healthy foods that are offered at discount prices that week in particular. When you do go shopping, make sure that it is not on an empty stomach, when you will be craving fatting foods and will be more likely to overspend and waste money on unhealthy products.</p>

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. However, that doesn’t stop millions of Americans, and people around the world, from skipping breakfast or opting for only a drink of coffee. The truth is that breakfast really is the most important meal of the day, and you will have a much more healthy diet if you include breakfast in your daily life.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">Breakfast is rightly named—break fast. When you sleep, you are not eating for 6 to 9 hours at least, and more if you haven’t eaten since dinner the night before. Therefore, breakfast is the first time you’ll be eating anything for a very long period of time. Some nutrients, like proteins, cannot be stored in the body and are therefore not present, so the body needs you to replenish the “low” levels of such nutrients. Breakfast is like the match that lights the fire. It truly is a very important source of energy for your body in the morning.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">Eating breakfast in the morning also helps you avoid some illnesses and disease. For example, your sugar levels are probably out of whack from not eating for many hours, so having breakfast levels out the amount of sugars in your body, helping to prevent diabetes. Eating a healthy breakfast also helps you to provide food to your stomach so that you don’t overeat at lunch because you are so hungry. Overeating leads to obesity, which comes with a whole host of problems, including heart disease.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Healthy breakfast foods, like eggs, fruit, or bran cereal are also a good source of many of the vitamins and minerals a person needs during the day. If you don’t eat these things in the morning, it will be hard to make up for that loss later in the day. Remember that without the proper amounts of nutrients, you body will not function correctly. When you eat a healthy breakfast, it also makes you choose healthier foods during the rest of the day, so that you continue to get the proper nutrients needed for your body.</p>

<p>Eating healthy foods will help you to boost your immune system, but what if it’s the foods themselves making you sick? Foodborne illness can cause food poisoning and a variety of other more dangerous diseases, so they are a real threat to our bodies. Luckily, there are a number of things you can do to prevent foodborne illnesses. Following safety tips when handling, preparing and storing food is very important.</p>
<p>First and foremost, you should be concerned with the temperature of your foods. When cooking meat, make sure to use a thermometer in order to make sure that your meat is reaching to proper temperatures inside. Some meats, like beef, can be served rare safely, but proper temperatures are crucial. This kills any bacteria that may be growing on the meat. In the case of burger and other loaf meats that have been ground and formed into patties, you should not eat rare meals. The bacteria then easily is found inside the meat as well as on the outside, and you are at risk if you do not cook these meats for a long period of time to kill any bacteria.</p>
<p>After your food is cooked, you should continue to monitor the temperature. Simply put, keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Hot foods should be kept at temperatures above 140 degrees Fahrenheit, while cold foods should be kept at temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The range between that is where bacteria can grow. When letting food cool for refrigeration, place in the refrigerator after no more than two hours, and when thawing meals, do so in a bowl or pan in the refrigerator, rather than at room temperature.</p>
<p>Cross contamination is a huge culprit when you are concerned with preventing illness and your food. Cross contamination is basically the moving of bacteria from one dish to another. This happens when you use dirty cutting boards, don’t wish your dishes properly, and use the same utensil for all of your foods. If you use, for example, a knife to cut raw chicken and then use that same knife to cut your food after it has been cooked, some of the bacteria from the raw chicken has probably remained on the knife, which can make you very ill. Make sure that you are using a clean workspace and clean tools whenever you cook.</p>
<p>Along with using a clean environment, you should make sure that you are washing your hands regularly. Every time you touch raw foods, you should use disinfecting hand soap and hot water to make sure that no bacteria remains on your hands. Making sure that your food is safe is one of the most important parts of healthy eating, so don’t overlook this step the next time you prepare a meal.</p>

<p>Not only do healthy, nutrient-dense foods nourish your body and help the cells grow and reproduce, they also help arm your body’s defenses to ward off attacks from germs that cause colds.  Low-fat meats, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and whole grains all play a part in preparing your body to do battle.</p>
<p>Another important component of your anti-cold defense system is water.  When your body is dehydrated, it’s at an increased risk of germs latching on and not letting go. So be sure to drink plenty of water and decaffeinated drinks to help your body stay hydrated and ready.</p>
<p>Just one cup of yogurt a day may work to keep the gastrointestinal track healthier, which can help ward off colds.  It has to be yogurt with live cultures, as this is the key ingredient that helps keep the GI track ready to rumble. And an added bonus to eating yogurt &#8211; recent studies suggest regular dairy consumption helps you lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.</p>
<p>Garlic contains allicin, an antibiotic that has been shown to prevent complications from a cold in some research. Garlic can be added to many of your favorite dishes to spice them up and help you suit up to do battle against cold germs.</p>
<p>It’s been said an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Well, so can an orange. One orange a day provides your recommended daily allowance of vitamin C. Oranges are also abundant in flavonoids, which helps your body’s cells regenerate and stay healthy and strong. Green bell peppers are the vegetable family’s best vitamin C source. Add them to a salad, or simply slice one up and eat it raw.  Flavonoids are also found in peppers.  You may even want to prepare a green pepper dip seasoned with garlic for an added germ-kicking effect.</p>
<p>Lean ground beef, especially when prepared with a bit of garlic, can maintain cell health and fight off illness. It’s a good source of protein, selenium and zinc, and when eaten with a bit of tomato, is a great defense during cold season.</p>

								<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When I eat out I want it to be special, consequently I don&#8217;t eat out often. You may have seen the advice on how to shave calories at restaurants but really, are you wanting to pay high restaurant prices for undressed salads and plain steamed vegetables? If not, how then can you solve the dilemma of too many calories when you eat out?</p>
<p>Here are seven tips for getting the calories out of restaurant meals while still ordering your favorites.</p>
<p>1. <b>Say NO to super sizing</b>. The size you ordered is already too big. Stop super sizing and you&#8217;ll save money. Better still, order one dinner and ask for an extra plate. Many restaurants will do this for a dollar or two, and it&#8217;s well worth it. Then share the meal with your friend and you split the cost straight down the middle. Another option is to order from the so called &#8220;appetizer&#8221; menu. Two people could order three entrees, one dessert and split the whole thing and it&#8217;s still a ton of food!</p>
<p>2. <b>Skip the bread and rolls</b>. Many family restaurants still serve a bread basket with your meal. Unless it&#8217;s a fresh baked loaf or some really special bread, just skip it. You don&#8217;t need to fill up on ordinary bread when you&#8217;re paying good money for a meal. Just ask for it to be taken away if you can&#8217;t resist, but frankly, you&#8217;re an adult, you can resist, if you want to. You can simply choose not to put a roll on your plate. Try it, just once and see if you don&#8217;t walk out of that restaurant feeling strangely powerful.</p>
<p>If you can&#8217;t skip the rolls, at least skip the butter. That&#8217;s right. Eat it plain. Whole grain bread is delicious all by itself.</p>
<p>3. <b>Stop Ordering Drinks</b>. Soft drinks are a huge cash cow for restaurants. For pennies they sell you a squirt of syrup and carbonated water and act like they&#8217;re doing you a big favor by only charging you $1.29 for a giant 64 ounce soda. Start saving those dollars. Especially if you&#8217;re ordering &#8220;to go&#8221; skip the drink. If you&#8217;re eating it there, ask for water, or at least switch to diet drinks. Never drink &#8220;fat pop.&#8221;</p>
<p>4. <b>Slow Down You Eat Too Fast</b>! What&#8217;s the rush? Take your time, savor the moment, enjoy the flavors. A big part of getting in touch with your hunger signals and learning to eat what really will satisfy is learning to recognize the subtle signs of hunger. You won&#8217;t know when you&#8217;re approaching satisfaction if you&#8217;ve gobbled everything down in five minutes. Take a bite then notice how many times do you chew before you start wanting to swallow? Once, twice? Make an effort to chew your food and your body will be much happier. A very large part of digestion begins in your mouth, not to mention you&#8217;ll get much more pleasure if you let the food linger.</p>
<p>5. <b>Trim Visible Fat and Skin</b>. I know, you really love the skin&#8211;of course you do, it tastes good, it should, it&#8217;s pure fat. Do you want to get leaner, or do you want to eat fat? You choose. I never eat chicken skin and never eat the visible fat hanging off a steak, good taste or no. You have to decide what you want more, the second&#8217;s worth of pleasure of a yummy taste, or a lifetime of carrying around an extra 40 lbs? I know this is counter to the low carb crowd&#8217;s belief that fat is good, carbs are evil, but I&#8217;ve maintained an 80 pound weight loss for 18 years without dieting and I don&#8217;t eat visible fat or skin. Enough said.</p>
<p>6. <b>Ask for a Doggie Bag</b> at the Beginning of Meal. When the food is served, immediately portion off some to take home for tomorrow. Most restaurants in the US serve way too much. There is no law you have to eat it all. Do this frequently and soon you&#8217;ll find you&#8217;re getting an extra lunch out of that meal.</p>
<p>7. <b>Get a copy of<a href="https://amzn.to/2yBzTHZ"> Restaurant Confidential</a></b> by Michael F. Jacobson and Jayne Hurley, and start checking out how many calories you&#8217;re really eating. If you eat out frequently and you carry extra weight, then that&#8217;s probably the problem right there. This little book can help you realize why it seems you don&#8217;t eat that much yet you can&#8217;t lose any weight. Hardees recently introduced a new burger that clocks in at just under 1200 calories all by itself! Now that&#8217;s frightening.</p>
<p>If you really want to get a handle on your weight problem, look first to where you eat, second at what you eat, and third how much you eat. Where, What and How Much? Try these steps choosing one tip at a time, and see how easily you can take some of the calories out of restaurant food.</p>
