Hives are also known as urticaria, and they cause raised
white or yellow, itchy wheals surrounded by an area of red inflammation. It is
an allergic reaction by the skin, causing the body to release histamine into
the effected tissues. The size of the wheal itself varies, with the larger ones
sometimes joining together in places to form an irregular rash. They usually
cause severe irritation and usually appear on the limbs and trunk, but can
appear anywhere. Acute urticaria develops rapidly and usually lasts for just as
few hours – it is characterized by a feverish, faint feeling and occasionally
nausea. Chronic urticaria can persist for a long period of time.

Common
triggers include drugs such as aspirin and penicillin, food additives, food
sensitivity such as milk eggs, shellfish and nuts, environmental factors such
as exposure to cold, heat or sunlight, stress and anxiety, and bites and stings.

All fruits and vegetables contain some amount of vitamin
C. Foods that tend to be the highest sources of vitamin C include green
peppers, citrus fruits and juices, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, turnip
greens and other leafy greens, sweet and white potatoes, cantaloupe and
spinach. Vitamin
C helps promote a healthy immune system and releases antihistamines. Green tea
is also reported to have an antihistamine effect.

Vitamin B12 has
been reported to reduce the severity of acute hives as well as to reduce the
frequency and severity of outbreaks in chronic cases. Vitamin B12 is found in
animal foods, fortified foods, and some fermented foods. Some sources of B12
are eggs, meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, and foods made from soy. Salmon and low-fat milk are particularly good
sources.

If you suffer
from food allergies, it’s important to keep a detailed food diary. Note what you ate when you have hives
breakouts, as it may be just a simple matter of eliminating a food or several
foods from your diet in order to avoid suffering from hives.

Do you develop hives after eating a certain food? Do you find it difficult to breathe after
eating a certain food? If you do, you
may be suffering from a food allergy. Unfortunately,
for some individuals it isn’t so easy to tell if they are. This is most commonly the case when symptoms
are not severe. For more information to
help you determine if you do have a food allergy, please continue reading on.

One of the best ways to determine if you are suffering from
a food allergy is to visit your healthcare provider. Many develop tests or trails to determine
which food or foods you are allergic to, if any. It is also a good idea to visit a doctor if
you suspect that you may have a food allergy, as they may be able to provide
you with information and tips on making a lifestyle change, which may include
eliminating the food or foods that are causing your problems. Medication may also be given.

As previously stated, hives are a good indication that you
may be suffering from a food allergy. In
fact, hives are one of the most common symptoms experienced by those who do
have a food allergy. Hives are easy to
notice and spot. If you develop hives,
they can be treated with use of oatmeal.
A great home remedy involves taking a cup of bowling water and pouring
it over oatmeal. After a few minutes
strain, then let cool some more and dab on the hives with a cotton ball or
cloth. While this home remedy will help
with your hives, it is still important to determine which foods are causing
them.

Swelling of the tongue and throat are two more common symptoms
of a food allergy. These symptoms can, unfortunately,
lead to difficult breathing. If you ever
experience these symptoms, you will want to seek medical attention right away. This is important if you have not officially
been diagnosed as having a food allergy, as you may not have helpful medication
on hand.

Those who suffering from food allergies who have a reaction
may also feel light headed or experience a loss of conscious. If this happens to you, it is important that
medical attention is sought right away. In fact, death can be the results if improper
medical attention and care. That is why
it is important to seek medical attention the moment that you suspect you may
have a food allergy. As previously
stated, hives are a good sign that you may.
You should seek the advice of a professional in the medical field before
your symptoms are able escalate.

Once you have officially been diagnosed as having a food
allergy, it is important that you let those around you know of your
diagnosis. This is particularly
important if you regularly eat dinner at the homes of your friends or
relatives. Those individuals will need
to know what not to include in their meals or they can make alternative
arrangements for you. This notification
is also important in case you have a reaction.
As previously stated, those that are around you need to know the proper
way to react, whether it be administering medication or calling for an ambulance.

As stated above, it is important that you seek medical
attention if you suspect that you have an allergy to food.

Childhood food allergies can be deadly. Take care to protect your child while traveling.

If possible, make sure your child knows and understands the foods they are allergic to and what happens when they eat that food. If traveling to visit friends or family, be sure to inform them of the child’s allergy. Ask them to be diligent in reading labels while your child is visiting.

Some airlines list flight meals on their website. Most airlines provide special meals for those with food allergies if you notify them in advance. Check with your airline for details. However, there is no guarantee that your meal will not be prepared or come in contact with something you are allergic to. Avoid potential problems on the road or airplane by making and packing trip snacks yourself.

When eating out, be sure to ask servers about offending ingredients and avoid roadside stands and unlicensed eating establishments.

Different countries have different food labeling laws. Make sure you know the labeling laws and customs for the country you are visiting. Also, you and your child must know how to effectively communicate the name of the food and severity of the allergy in the language of every country you visit.

The food allergic child should wear a medical alert bracelet at all times. In an emergency, parents may not be available to give information to medical personnel.

Carry your child’s allergy medication and emergency injectable with you at all times. The medications should go where ever the child goes.

Keep doctor’s phone number and local emergency numbers handy.

If traveling out of the country consider purchasing pre-printed cards with your child’s food allergy information printed on them. You order cards from a company called Select Wisely. Cards come in many languages and cover any allergy or combination of allergies.
