<p>Reality shows are one of the biggest things people watch on television. This is because the events that happen are not scripted and naturally unfold in front of the viewer. One show that is helping people want to become healthy again is the biggest loser. </p>



<p>The contestants are a bunch of overweight men and women who work out and go on a diet and at the end of the week; one of these players will be eliminated. The person who loses the biggest number of pounds after a three-month campaign will win $250,000 and have a second chance of living a healthy life. </p>



<p>The individual doesnít have to fight for money in order to make some lifestyle changes. As the saying goes. ëhealth is wealthí and this is something more precious than any sheet of paper with a dollar sign has to offer.</p>



<p>People are able to burn more calories while exercising. This means the body will burn the food eaten and this has to be replaced so there is energy after to do other functions. The individual should get a meal that has the right amounts of carbohydrates, proteins and fats so this can repair damaged tissue, refuel and lower the bodyís cholesterol.   </p>



<p>Here are some examples of food that should be eaten after a workout. </p>



<p>Eating bread has been known to replenish the energy lost after a workout. Since this has certain ingredients that are high in bad cholesterol, this can be substituted for wheat bread that is much healthier. Nuts can also help lower the cholesterol and getting some low fat peanut butter will surely make a great sandwich.</p>



<p>Having a fruit is also good to lower the cholesterol. It is advisable to eat as a whole instead of taking away the skin or turning this into a juice. Studies have shown that eating it the way it is keeps the natural fibers that are good for the person. An apple is just one of many fruits that can be eaten once it has been washed. </p>



<p>If the person wants to save some money after going to the gym, it is best to pack some snacks that can be consumed after a workout. Cutting some carrot sticks or slicing a few tomatoes then packing it in a plastic container will come in handy after taking a shower and reporting for work or when going home. </p>



<p>When the person comes home, it is time to prepare something that can provide better sustenance. An example could be having some fish or chicken thrown into the microwave or having it steam. Studies have shown that frying using cooking oil also increases the personís cholesterol level so cooking it in another manner can reduce this.</p>



<p>Having some vegetables along will help make this a healthy meal. Some garlic and onions can be prepared since studies have shown this to lower the liverís production of cholesterol.  The serving for tonight can end with some yogurt for dessert leaving the individual satisfied and light. </p>



<p>Lowering the cholesterol will not happen overnight. By observing a proper diet with exercise, the individual will be able to lose weight and cuts down the cholesterol levels that puts the person in potential danger of high blood pressure, a stroke or a heart attack.  </p>

<p>It is essential that you take care when preparing foods and avoid doing certain things when pregnant. This is due to your baby&#8217;s immune system not being sufficiently developed to fight any infection you may pass to it whilst within the womb. It is believed that a female&#8217;s immune system may not function at its peak during pregnancy so it is essential that all necessary precautions are taken</p>



<p>Pets</p>



<p>It is essential that if you have a pet that every time you come into contact with them you wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Pets can pass on harmful bacteria that may be present in their feces. You may inadvertently become infected with this by touching your mouth or other part of the body and this may in turn infect your unborn child.</p>



<p>Cats are of particular importance due to toxoplasmosis found within their feces. If you have a cat that uses a litter tray it is important that someone else carries out this task or if this is not possible then you should wear rubber gloves and a face mask to prevent any bacteria being passed. This also applies to gardening where fecal matter can be found in the soil. Again, wear gloves and wash your hands as soon as possible after finishing.</p>



<p>Toxoplasmosis is caused by a parasite. It can go unnoticed in a healthy adult or even an unborn baby. Once you have this infection you will not become re-infected and will be immune for life.</p>



<p>Listeria</p>



<p>This is a bacteria which develops into an illness called listeriosis. The symptoms of this are mild flu, aches and pains, sore throat and high temperatures. In the more serious of cases this can cause septicaemia and meningitis in unborn babies. This is the worst case scenario. In some cases many people are not aware they have caught the bacteria as they do not show any of the above symptoms. During pregnancy, mothers have to be aware of certain foods where this bacteria may be prevalent. </p>



<p>This is true for after pregnancy as well especially if you are nursing your child. The symptoms usually develop from 2 to 30 days after eating contaminated food.</p>



<p>Foods to Avoid</p>



<p>Cheese</p>



<p>Not all cheeses contain the bacteria but there are some which can be potentially harmful to a pregnant mother.<br> Avoid both pasteurized and unpasteurized soft cheeses which usually have a surface mould or rind such as Brie, Camembert and Danish Blue. Also avoid cheeses coated in wax such as Gouda, Post Salut. It is best to stay clear of the majority of blue cheeses such as Stilton, Gorgonzola and Roquefort. Hard Cheeses such as Cheddar, Parmesan, and Red Leicester fall into the safe category as do softer cheeses made from pasteurized milk such as Cottage cheese, mozzarella, ricotta, processed cheese and cheese spreads. If in doubt play safe and avoid eating it.</p>



<p>Eggs</p>



<p>The salmonella bacteria are most commonly found in eggs. It is best to avoid any foods made with raw or partly cooked eggs such as homemade mayonnaise, meringues, cheesecakes, sorbets or mousses. Eggs are only safe if they have been cooked long enough so that their yolks are hard.Shop-bought mayonnaises are usually safe as long as they have been made with pasteurized eggs. Always check the label if in doubt.</p>



<p>Milk</p>



<p>Avoid all products which have not been pasteurized.<br>All pasteurized products are safe to use all through pregnancy and beyond.</p>



<p>Meat</p>



<p>Do not eat raw or under cooked meat or poultry. Also avoid meats which have been preserved in nitrates such as salami, frankfurters and luncheon meat. Always cook meat so the juices run clear and there is no pinkness or blood within. When touching raw meat and poultry always wash your hands thoroughly before touching any other foods. Liver contains vitamin A in the form of retinol which if taken by a pregnant women can increase <br> her levels way above the recommended daily level and become damaging to the baby. Liver should be avoided as well as products containing liver such as pate and liver sausage.</p>



<p>Seafood</p>



<p>Oysters and any raw or uncooked fish should be avoided. Also shelled seafood such as crab, prawns, and langoustines should be avoided unless they have been thoroughly cooked and are hot. Most seafood bought from a fishmonger or supermarket should be safe. Fresh tuna should only be  eaten once a month due to the potential levels of mercury found within. This is also true for swordfish and shark. Tinned tuna contains lower levels so this is safe to eat every week.</p>



<p>Salads</p>



<p>All prepared shop bought salads are best to be avoided. So too are dressed salads such as coleslaw, potato salad and Florida salad. It is best to make your own and ensure that all leaves are thoroughly washed free from soils and other deposits found on the leaves.</p>

<p>No one knows for sure what causes migraine headaches.  The most likely to answer to-date is that a serious of small irritations or reactions pile up until, finally, a migraine headache is triggered.  Migraine triggers are different for each individual, but many migraineurs claim that a particular food or combination of foods will push them over the edge into a headache.</p>



<p>Keep in mind that most science disagrees with migraineurs when it comes to food triggers.  There are no conclusive studies indicating a link between certain foods and migraine headaches, so all information is anecdotal.  The thing is there is a lot, tons in fact, of anecdotal evidence for the link.  </p>



<p>While a migraine trigger food can be, quite literally, anything, some foods come up on the trigger list for enough people to merit discussion.</p>



<p>Cheese</p>



<p>Cheese is a major trigger for many migraineurs.  Particularly likely to cause an attack are hard or aged cheeses.  Soft cheeses like cream cheese and new cheeses seem to be fine and unlikely to cause problems.</p>



<p>Processed Meats</p>



<p>Nitrates are believed by many to be a major migraine trigger.  For most people, the most common source of nitrates is processed meat, items like hot dogs, sausage, bacon, processed lunchmeats, etc.</p>



<p>Condiments</p>



<p>Salad dressings are a trigger for many.  The reason is not known, but is probably tied to a combination of other triggers all coming together in one place.</p>



<p>Spices and Additives</p>



<p>Any spice can be a trigger.  Spices as triggers may be tied, at least partially, to scent sensitivity, since many spices have a pungent odor. Seasonings that seem to give migraineurs the most trouble include monosodium glutamate (MSG), common in Asian foods, artificial sweeteners, food dyes, and vinegar.</p>



<p>Migraineurs who suspect a food trigger should consider trying an elimination diet to pinpoint the trigger food(s).  </p>

<p>Artichokes have been around for a long time. Originally found around the Mediterranean Sea, they were used by the ancient Romans to treat poor digestion.<br>
Somewhere along the line, the Romans realized artichokes also made great appetizers, and they have been a traditional Italian food ever since.</p>



<p>The Latin name for this greenish-purple vegetable is Cynara scolymus. Sometimes called French or Globe artichoke, it&#8217;s the flower of the plant that is sold in grocery stores. But don&#8217;t confuse it with the Jerusalem artichoke, which is really a tuber that grows in North America.</p>



<p>One medium artichoke supplies 20 percent of the vitamin C you need for the day. With only 60 calories, it&#8217;s also a good source of potassium and magnesium, both important for a healthy heart. And like most fruits and vegetables, it&#8217;s packed with disease-fighting antioxidants that nutritionists rave about.</p>



<p>3 ways artichokes keep you healthy</p>



<p>Steps up digestion. </p>



<p>As it turns out, the ancient Romans were onto something when it comes to artichokes and digestion. An ingredient in artichoke leaves helps your liver form bile &#8211; something necessary for good digestion. If your liver doesn&#8217;t produce enough bile, your food doesn&#8217;t get broken down properly, and you end up with stomach pains and indigestion.</p>



<p>If you feel sick to your stomach, overly full, and have abdominal pain after eating a normal-sized meal, you may suffer from dyspepsia &#8211; a fancy name for poor digestion.</p>



<p>Several scientific studies showed dramatic improvements in people with dyspepsia after being treated with artichoke extracts. You can also get help for your indigestion the way the ancient Romans did &#8211; by eating a delicious artichoke with your dinner.</p>



<p>Chokes out heart disease. </p>



<p>Bile from your liver does more than help you digest food. It also helps break down cholesterol from the fat you eat. But a liver that doesn&#8217;t produce enough bile lets too much cholesterol get by &#8211; kind of like the I Love Lucy episode where the chocolate assembly line starts moving too fast for her to keep up. People with liver problems can have high cholesterol even if they eat a low-fat diet.</p>



<p>That&#8217;s where artichokes come in. Because they can help you make more bile, you might be able to lower your cholesterol by eating them. A study in Germany showed that taking artichoke extract for six weeks caused LDL cholesterol, the bad kind, to fall by more than 22 percent. As a bonus, artichokes might also be able to block some new cholesterol from forming in your liver.</p>



<p>Lowers blood sugar. </p>



<p>Your liver is busier than you might think. In addition to breaking down fatty foods, it also stores extra glucose (sugar) in the form of glycogen and turns it back into glucose whenever it gets a phone call from your blood saying that supplies are too low. This is a great system in a perfectly working body. But some people have faulty phone lines, and their livers work day and night cranking out glucose their blood doesn&#8217;t need. This overproduction of glucose can lead to diabetes and other health problems.</p>



<p>In animal studies, researchers found that substances in artichokes kept livers from making too much glucose. More studies need to be done, but scientists think artichokes might someday be useful to people with noninsulin-dependent diabetes. In the future, people might use plants, like artichokes, to keep their blood sugar production in check.</p>



<p>Pantry pointers</p>



<p>Choose artichokes with even, green color. Don&#8217;t buy any that look wilted, dried out, or moldy. Heavy, small heads are best.</p>



<p>Small artichokes are good for appetizers, and larger ones can be used for stuffing with a variety of fillings and served as an entree.</p>



<p>Be sure to trim about an inch off the top with a sharp knife. And then trim about one-quarter inch from the tips of the leaves since this part is inedible and rough on your hands.</p>



<p>Artichokes can be steamed in a steamer basket or boiled in water. They should be tender and ready to eat in about 30 minutes. If you&#8217;re in a hurry, you can microwave them more quickly. First, rinse them with water to add some moisture. Then wrap each one in microwaveable plastic wrap. For four artichokes, microwave on high for 10 to 15 minutes or until the meaty part at the base of the artichoke is tender.</p>



<p>You can serve these veggies hot or cold. Some people serve a dipping sauce with artichokes. It would be a shame to ruin a lowfat food with a rich sauce, so try a low-calorie, yogurt-based dip.</p>



<p>If you&#8217;ve never eaten an artichoke, you might be a little confused about what part is edible. The outer leaves are hard and a little bitter, but at the bottom of the leaf, where they pull away from the stem, there is a soft, velvety hunk of &#8220;meat&#8221; that you can eat by gently pulling the leaf through your teeth. After you&#8217;ve nibbled all the leaves this way, you&#8217;re left with the best part of the artichoke &#8211; the heart. This is a soft, nutty-flavored center that can be eaten whole. Just scrape off the soft fuzz with a spoon before you dig in.</p>

<p>Why do we need to eat foods that are found to be naturally high in antioxidants?<br>What are antioxidants?<br>Which foods do we need to eat, in order to naturally fight free radicals?</p>



<p>Scientists have found that the body forms unstable oxygen molecules, called free radicals; every cell produces tens of thousands of them each day. A free radical is basically an atom with an odd number of electrons in its outer ring. Since electrons have a very strong tendency to exist in a paired rather than an unpaired state, free radicals indiscriminately pick up electrons from other atoms, which in turn convert those other atoms into secondary free radicals, thus setting up a chain reaction, which can cause substantial biological damage. This, in short, is bad. There are also many kinds of free radicals, which we are exposed to everyday, for example, pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke and herbicides. </p>



<p>Antioxidants are thought to neutralise and stabilise these free radicals.</p>



<p>So, which antioxidants are naturally found in which foods?</p>



<p>We have:</p>



<p>Vitamin E: a fat-soluble vitamin found in vegetable oils, nuts, green leafy vegetables, and fortified cereals. Some of the foods containing the highest amounts of vitamin E are wheat germ oil, almonds, sunflower seeds, sunflower oil, hazelnuts, peanuts, spinach, broccoli, kiwi and mango.<br>
Vitamin E is an antioxidant vitamin involved in the metabolism of all cells. It protects vitamin A and essential fatty acids from oxidation in the body cells and prevents breakdown of body tissues. </p>

<p>Hives are also known as urticaria, and they cause raised
white or yellow, itchy wheals surrounded by an area of red inflammation. It is
an allergic reaction by the skin, causing the body to release histamine into
the effected tissues. The size of the wheal itself varies, with the larger ones
sometimes joining together in places to form an irregular rash. They usually
cause severe irritation and usually appear on the limbs and trunk, but can
appear anywhere. Acute urticaria develops rapidly and usually lasts for just as
few hours &#8211; it is characterized by a feverish, faint feeling and occasionally
nausea. Chronic urticaria can persist for a long period of time.</p>



<p>Common
triggers include drugs such as aspirin and penicillin, food additives, food
sensitivity such as milk eggs, shellfish and nuts, environmental factors such
as exposure to cold, heat or sunlight, stress and anxiety, and bites and stings.
</p>



<p>All fruits and vegetables contain some amount of vitamin
C. Foods that tend to be the highest sources of vitamin C include green
peppers, citrus fruits and juices, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, turnip
greens and other leafy greens, sweet and white potatoes, cantaloupe and
spinach. Vitamin
C helps promote a healthy immune system and releases antihistamines. Green tea
is also reported to have an antihistamine effect. </p>



<p>Vitamin B12 has
been reported to reduce the severity of acute hives as well as to reduce the
frequency and severity of outbreaks in chronic cases. Vitamin B12 is found in
animal foods, fortified foods, and some fermented foods. Some sources of B12
are eggs, meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, and foods made from soy. &nbsp;Salmon and low-fat milk are particularly good
sources. </p>

<p>If your baby is ready to start on solid foods, you might be a bit confused as to which foods are best. There are a wide variety of foods that can be good starter foods. Here are some ideas to help you get going.</p>



<p>Rice, Mixed Grain or Oat Cereal<br>
This is the typical baby cereal that you mix with formula or breast milk. This is a good starter food because it is easily tolerated and you can make it as thin as you like for those first meals. Start with just about a tablespoon of the cereal.</p>



<p>Yellow Vegetables<br>
Mild yellow vegetables like squash, carrots and sweet potatoes are good starters, too. They are easy on the stomach and babies usually love the taste.</p>



<p>Yogurt<br> Many babies love plain, unsweetened yogurt, and it is a very healthy first food. If your baby doesn&#8217;t like it, try yogurt with the fruit on the bottom, but check labels, and buy yogurt with low sugar content. Very often the grocery store brand will be lower in sugar than the national brands.</p>



<p>Mild Fruits<br>
Applesauce, bananas, peaches and pears are all good choices, and babies love them.</p>



<p>These are some of the best foods to offer first. Many pediatricians recommend offering vegetables, cereals and unsweetened yogurt first and adding fruits and sweetened yogurt a bit later. This is based on the theory that saving sweeter foods for later discourages the development of a sweet tooth. </p>



<p>Be certain that you introduce only one new food at a time, and wait a week before introducing something new. This will let you determine if there is any food that your child is allergic to or does not tolerate well. Once you have introduced the foods above successfully, you can add other vegetables, like green beans and peas, and meat. It is usually recommended that you wait until your baby is older to introduce spinach and broccoli. </p>



<p>Beware trying to approach those first few solid meals when your baby is really hungry he is likely to rebel. Give him just a little breast milk or formula, and he is likely to be much more patient with the process. Don&#8217;t expect much those first few feedings. Your baby will wear more than he will eat for some time. But, it will get better and these first few meals are more about learning the skill than actual nutrition, anyway!</p>
